Fire starting
Flint and steel, friction methods, and keeping a fire going when the wood is damp.
Fire is the skill most people remember from the day. You learn how a fire is built from the ground up, from what to collect to a fire that keeps burning on its own.
We start with fire safety and choosing a spot, then collect tinder, kindling and fuel wood before anyone lights anything. You try flint and steel, and later a friction method, which takes patience and usually a few failed attempts before it works.
The last part is about wet conditions: how to find dry wood inside damp branches and keep a small fire going.
What you will learn
- Choose a safe spot and know where and when fires are allowed
- Tell tinder, kindling and fuel wood apart, and gather enough of each
- Build a fire that gets enough air and holds together
- Light a fire with flint and steel
- Try a friction method and see why technique matters more than strength
- Keep a fire going in damp wood, and put it out completely afterwards
